A Fathers Diary

Three months ago my 18-year-old daughter Shelley flew to Peru to volunteer with Cross-Cultural Solutions. She flies home this week for Christmas. Here is a letter Shelley wrote to Paulo Coelho’s secretary. This gives you Shelley’s vision to see women and children liberate themselves from the inside!

Dear Felicidade Cornwell,

Thank you for your willingness to support, educate and motivate the women and children of Yanamilla prison by donating some of Paulo Coelho’s books.

The books will be used to help build a collection of positive reading material, which will hopefully encourage the women to realize ways of making the best of their current situation. We hope to see the formation of new initiatives such as, English classes, dance classes, meditation sessions and beauty training mainly led by the women themselves. It is our hope that not only will these initiatives improve the quality of life for the women whilst in prison but also result in the women being better equipped to reintegrate with the outside world.

There are currently around 1200 inmates. Of which 120 women and 10 children in the prison, however numbers vary and there have been up to 30 children at one time. The prison has the capacity of 600 inmates and so the quality of the living quarters, especially the women is very poor.

Around 90% of the women are in prison for trafficking drugs or drug related products. Many of the women turned to this activity in desperation to feed themselves and their families. There is little or no work in the region. This problem is further exasperated by poor education and the belief that what they were doing wasn’t really a crime. Women who are caught alone will receive a sentence of approximately five years. Those who are caught in a group of three or more are assumed to be part of an organized group and can receive sentences for fifteen years. On top of the sentences is the waiting time for a trail, which is very uncertain and can be up to two years or more.

Shelley was determined not to cry when she left the women this week, yet she did and somewhere the women and children knew she truly cared and loved them.

We can’t all go off and volunteer, yet we can with our mind, body and soul help connect to being the world we want to see in our moment-to-moment thinking. If you can help anywhere in any way do it never let anyone including your fears put you off.

Angel Ornament


Santa was very upset. It was Christmas Eve and NOTHING was going right!

Mrs. Claus had burned all the cookies. The elves were complaining about not getting paid for the overtime they had while making the toys. The reindeer had been drinking all afternoon and were dead drunk. To make matters worse, they had taken the sleigh out for a spin earlier in the day and had crashed it into a tree.

Santa was furious. "I can't believe it! I've got to deliver millions of presents all over the world in just a few hours and all of my reindeer are drunk, the elves are on strike and I don't even have a Christmas tree!"

He continued, "And I sent that stupid Little Angel out hours ago to find a tree and he isn't even back yet! What am I going to do?"

Just then, the Little Angel opened the front door and stepped in from the snowy night, dragging a Christmas tree behind him. He said, "Yo, fat man! Where do you want me to stick the tree this year?"

And thus the tradition of angels atop the Christmas tree got its start...
